Types of Services Available

Physical Rehabilitation and Alternative Medicine Services and Definition of Terms

Services Available:

Acupuncture

  • Dry Needles (stimulation of acupuncture points with the placement of thin needles)
  • Laser Stimulation ( needleless stimulation of acupoints with laser light)
  • Electro-acupuncture (electricity is applied to the needles for greater stimulation)
  •  Aqua-acupuncture (a small amount of fluid is injected into an acupuncture point for an enhanced effect).

Physical Rehabilitation:

  • Manual therapies: ( massage, passive range of motion, stretching, gentle joint compressions, mobilizations and traction).
  • Hydrotherapy (underwater treadmill/UWT)
  • Therapeutic Laser or Low Level Laser Therapy or LLLT (the application of light of usually invisible spectrum to tissues to decrease inflammation, reduce muscle spasm, and promote healing)
  •  Electromuscular Stimulation or EMS (the application of electricity to muscle to stimulate muscle contraction, prevent or reduce muscle atrophy)
  • Transcutaneous electrical neuromuscular stimulation or TENS
  •  Therapeutic exercises including: Physioball, balance, proprioceptive, strengthening, weight-bearing, active range of motion exercises, home exercise instruction
  • Thermal/Cold Therapy
  • Cart Fitting

Holistic Consultation:

  • Nutritional Support (Vitamins/Supplements, Probiotics, Enzymes/whole food products, diet recommendations)
  •  TCM or Traditional Chinese Medicine (Chinese Herbal, Acupuncture, food therapy)
  • Food Therapy (the utilization of Chinese medicine theory to incorporate food items to enhance health)
  • Western Herbal Medicine.

Weight Loss Program

  • Land or Underwater Treadmill
  • Diet/Supplements

Geriatric Program (alternative therapies to alleviate pain, improve mobility, support the immune system and improve cognitive function)

  • Acupuncture
  • Hydrotherapy
  • Massage
  • Nutritional support

Modalities used, how they work and benefits:

  • Underwater Treadmill (UWT): buoyancy allows exercise with less stress to the joints, cardiovascular benefits, height of water and speed of treadmill offer variable benefits, appropriate for post-op disc, arthritis, healed fractures, weight loss and conditioning.
  • LLLT/Cold Laser: low-level laser therapy, nonthermal light energy to simulate healing, reduce inflammation, provide pain relief. Photons of wavelengths between 600-1000nm are applied to the affected tissue. The energy is absorbed into the cells and is used to synthesize DNA, RNA, proteins and enzymes which will help regenerate and repair the tissue. This may include cartilage stimulation, collagen synthesis, and fibroblast production. Uses include arthritis, tendonitis, muscle spasm, wound healing and the stimulation of acupuncture points.
  • EMS/NMES: Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation, enhances the ability of the muscle to contract using low-level electrical current. Stimulates the alpha motor nerve. Uses for muscle or neurologic atrophy, and to facilitate normal muscle contraction.
  • TENS: Transcutaneous Electrical Neuromuscular Stimulaton, decreases pain and inflammation through the use of a low level electrical current. Interferes with pain perception pathways.
Animal Specialty Group, Inc. Animal Specialty Group was started in March of 1990 by Dr. Kirk Wendelburg. The hospital has grown from a two doctor practice to a large multi-doctor specialty practice and is now recognized as a premier referral hospital.
