Thank You, From the Animals of Huanchaco, Caty, and ASG

The Dogs of Huanchaco-0927

People and animals have different levels of suffering in some countries, and we hope that by coming together and helping each other, we can make a difference.

First, I would like to take a moment and thank all of the donors that made this trip possible for me. Your help changed many animals’ lives, and mine, in the process.

We were scheduled to leave on Friday night and unfortunately, due to a mechanical failure, our flight was delayed for 24 hours. We arrived to Huanchaco on Sunday afternoon and began setting up the makeshift hospital at the Hotel Huankarute pool house. When we started working early on Monday morning, people were beginning to line up with their pets at about 7:00am. It is very humbling to watch so many people patiently waiting for hours without fussing or complaining; just grateful that we were there to care for their dogs.

On the team’s day off, we were asked to go to the courthouse of Huanchaco to meet with the mayor and local veterinarians. We were all speechless to find they were thanking our sponsor, Perros Project, for all that the organization has done for the dogs of Huanchaco, and all of us individually with a certificate. Naturally, some of us were brought to tears. They also mentioned how much has changed for the animals in Huanchaco: all shelters are now working together to better serve all of the homeless dogs in the area, and a leash law has been put in place, therefore decreasing the amount of dogs seen roaming the streets.

Although we faced some challenges, we continued to work as a team to provide attention to the animals, and even collaborated with one of the local shelters, Amigos Fiel. By the end of our trip, we had spayed and neutered ninety-three animals, including eight cats. It was a very humbling experience, and a good reminder of how kind humanity can be when we all come together for a common cause: the love for animals.

When we travel to Third World Countries, we are reminded constantly of the need for all countries to get together and give assistance if we are able to do so. People and animals have different levels of suffering in some countries, and we hope that by coming together and helping each other, we can make a difference.
